From a mining site to the world's largest cruise terminal
In short: The evolution of MSC Cruises is a study in rapid industrial scaling. In just over three decades, the company transformed from a small fleet of acquired ships into a global powerhouse that now owns its own infrastructure and restores abandoned industrial sites into private marine reserves.
Founded in 1988 in Naples by Gianluigi Aponte, MSC Cruises began by acquiring the Achille Lauro. The brand underwent a significant identity shift in 1995, rebranding from StarLauro Cruises to MSC Cruises. By 2017, it had established itself as the world's largest privately held cruise company, eventually securing a 10% share of all global passengers by 2025.
The company's growth strategy is defined by aggressive expansion and infrastructure ownership. In the early 2000s, MSC initiated a massive building program with the Chantiers de l'Atlantique shipyard. This momentum continued into the 2020s with the inauguration of the MSC Barcelona Cruise Terminal in April 2025—the company's first fully owned terminal—and the MSC Miami Cruise Terminal in May 2025, which holds the title of the world's largest cruise terminal.
Beyond logistics, the company has pivoted toward environmental restoration as a part of its brand identity. In 2015, MSC signed a 100-year lease for Ocean Cay in the Bahamas. The 95-acre site, which had been used for decades to mine white Aragonite sand, required a $200 million restoration project. This involved removing mining equipment and working with scientists to restore the area into a functioning marine habitat, officially opening as the Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve in December 2019. The line originally launched as StarLauro Cruises in 1988. It initially operated ships like the Monterey and the Achille Lauro. A tragic fire on the Achille Lauro in 1994 resulted in two deaths. The company also acquired the Enrico C and the Cunard Princess during its early years.
