The massive engineering feat of the MSC Virtuosa
In short: Spanning 181,000 gross tonnage, this Meraviglia-Plus-class titan was designed to carry over 6,000 guests. While its arrival was delayed by a global pandemic, the ship represents a significant leap in maritime technology, featuring advanced systems to slash harmful emissions.
Built by Chantiers de l'Atlantique in Saint-Nazaire, France, the MSC Virtuosa is the second vessel in the Meraviglia-Plus class. The ship's construction timeline saw its steel-cutting ceremony on 14 June 2018, followed by a float-out on 29 November 2019. Although originally slated to debut in November 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic delayed its delivery until 1 February 2021, with the ship officially entering service in May 2021. The vessel's development followed a 2016 announcement by MSC Cruises to convert options into firm orders for these larger ships. A coin ceremony was also held for the ship on 27 February 2019.
Beyond its scale, the vessel incorporates sophisticated environmental engineering. To mitigate its ecological footprint, the ship utilizes a selective catalytic reduction system, which is capable of reducing nitrogen oxide emissions by 80 percent. Additionally, a closed-loop exhaust gas cleaning system helps lower sulfur emissions by 97 percent. The ship is also designed to interface with shorepower when docked, further reducing its impact while in port. The ship's design allows it to accommodate a maximum of 6,334 guests. This capacity is part of the expanded Meraviglia Plus-class specifications.
The ship's operational history is marked by diverse global itineraries. After its initial service from Southampton, it re-positioned to Dubai in autumn 2021, sailing through the Persian Gulf to destinations including Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and Oman. By August 2022, plans were announced to base the ship in Southampton year-round. Most recently, in October 2025, the vessel entered dry dock at Damen Verolme Rotterdam for routine maintenance, scheduled to depart on 19 November 2025 for a transatlantic voyage to the Caribbean. The ship's summer 2022 season included voyages to the Canary Islands and the Norwegian Fjords. During its time in the Mediterranean, it also visited ports such as Lisbon and Malaga.
