Engineering a floating city: the massive scale of the new World-class cruise ships
In short: The World-class cruise ships represent a monumental shift in maritime engineering. Spanning over 200,000 gross tonnage, these vessels are designed to carry nearly 7,000 passengers. Beyond their sheer size, they integrate advanced fuel cell technology and liquefied natural gas power to redefine efficiency and environmental impact in the cruise industry.
The World-class series, commissioned by MSC Cruises and built by Chantiers de l'Atlantique in France, marks a significant evolution in ship design. Unveiled in 2016, the project was initially valued at approximately 4.5 billion euros. The lead vessel, MSC World Europa, set the standard upon its delivery in October 2022, boasting a gross tonnage of 215,863. These ships are defined by their unique architecture, including a Y-shaped hull for improved views and a G-shaped bow engineered for stability and fuel efficiency. Measuring 330 metres in length and 47 metres in width, each vessel is designed to accommodate 6,850 passengers across 2,760 cabins.
Central to the class is a commitment to sustainability through the use of liquefied natural gas (LNG). This shift is projected to reduce sulfur dioxide emissions by 99%, nitric oxide by 85%, and carbon dioxide by 20% compared to traditional marine fuels. Furthermore, the MSC World Europa serves as a testbed for innovation, featuring the world's first LNG-powered fuel cell. This 50-kilowatt solid oxide fuel cell demonstrator generates electricity and heat, offering an additional 30% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions over standard LNG engines.
The construction timeline reflects the ambition of this project. Following the delivery of the MSC World America in March 2025, the fleet is set to expand significantly, with six additional vessels planned for delivery between 2026 and 2031. The project has seen various adjustments, including the renaming of the lead ship from MSC Europa to MSC World Europa during its 2020 keel-laying ceremony. As the fleet grows, these ships remain a focal point for the future of large-scale passenger travel, balancing immense capacity with the technical challenges of modern environmental standards.
