The underdog boxer who inspired Rocky and survived fifteen rounds against Muhammad Ali
In short: When Chuck Wepner stepped into the ring with Muhammad Ali in 1975, he was a 10:1 underdog. Yet, this bruising club fighter managed to knock down the champion, nearly lasting the full distance. His grit became the foundation for the cinematic legend of Rocky Balboa, changing sports history forever.
On March 24, 1975, Muhammad Ali defended his undisputed heavyweight title against Chuck Wepner, a 36-year-old fighter from Bayonne, New Jersey. Known as 'The Bayonne Bleeder' for his tendency to sustain cuts, Wepner entered the bout ranked number 8 in the heavyweight division. The fight was widely viewed as a mismatch, with Ali reportedly doing minimal training. Ali, who had recently reclaimed his title from George Foreman, even joked that he avoided burning himself out training for opponents like Wepner.
The match was defined by its controversy and raw intensity. In the ninth round, Wepner landed a body shot that sent Ali to the canvas. While official records count this as a knockdown—the fourth and final time Ali was officially downed in his career—Ali insisted he was pushed after Wepner stepped on his foot. Photographic evidence supports Ali's claim, though Wepner maintains it was a legitimate blow. The fight was also marked by persistent 'dirty' tactics, with both men trading punches to the back of the head throughout the contest.
The bout ultimately ended in the fifteenth round when Ali, having punished Wepner with fierce combinations, knocked him out. However, the spectacle left a lasting cultural mark. Sylvester Stallone, who watched the fight live, was inspired by Wepner’s refusal to quit and his desire to prove he belonged in the ring. Within four days, Stallone wrote the screenplay for Rocky, which became the highest-grossing film of 1976 and won three Oscars. While Wepner did not receive initial credit, he later settled a 2003 lawsuit against Stallone, securing the right to be recognized as the inspiration for the character.
