From collegiate wrestling champion to international mixed martial arts star: the career of King Mo
In short: Muhammed Lawal, known as King Mo, transitioned from a decorated collegiate wrestling career to become a formidable force in mixed martial arts. After dominating the U.S. wrestling scene, he pivoted to the cage, capturing major championships across global promotions while navigating injuries, controversies, and high-stakes rematches throughout his professional journey.
Born in 1981, Muhammed Lawal developed his athletic foundation in Texas, where he became a state wrestling champion. His collegiate career was marked by significant success, including a national championship in NCAA Division II in 2002 and becoming a Big 12 Conference Champion at Oklahoma State University in 2003. Lawal also excelled in freestyle wrestling, securing the Senior U.S. national championship three times between 2005 and 2008. Despite his success, he narrowly missed a spot in the 2008 Olympics, a turning point that led him to pursue mixed martial arts.
Lawal’s transition to professional fighting was rapid. He made his debut in 2008, quickly gaining notoriety in the Japanese circuit before signing with the U.S.-based promotion Strikeforce. In 2010, he defeated Gegard Mousasi to claim the Strikeforce Light Heavyweight Championship. His career was not without turbulence; in 2012, he faced a suspension and a no-contest result after testing positive for the anabolic steroid Drostanolone. Following his release from Strikeforce, he joined Bellator, where he won the 2013 Summer Series light heavyweight tournament and continued to compete in high-profile bouts against veterans like Quinton Jackson and Ryan Bader.
Beyond his domestic success, Lawal maintained a significant presence in international competition. In 2015, he represented Bellator in the Rizin Fighting Federation’s 8-man tournament, ultimately winning the event by defeating Jiří Procházka in the finals. Throughout his career, Lawal has balanced his fighting pursuits with a lifelong interest in professional wrestling, having famously turned down a WWE developmental contract early in his career to focus on the cage. His path reflects the complex physical demands of elite combat sports, marked by frequent knee and rib injuries that often dictated the trajectory of his tournament appearances and title bids.
