The last chief minister of a united Andhra Pradesh
In short: Kiran Kumar Reddy’s political career is defined by a pivotal moment in Indian geography: the bifurcation of a state. As the final leader of United Andhra Pradesh, his tenure serves as a historical bridge between an old administrative order and a new territorial reality.
Reddy served as the 16th Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh from November 25, 2010, until March 1, 2014. His leadership concluded during a period of intense regional transition; he resigned in February 2014 specifically over the creation of Telangana state after the bill passed in the Lok Sabha. This act made him the final Chief Minister to lead the unified Andhra Pradesh under the Indian National Congress banner. He was appointed by the Congress Legislature Party in 2011 following Konijeti Rosaiah's personal resignation. Before his chief ministership, he served as a government chief whip for five years starting in 2004.
His political trajectory was marked by significant shifts in allegiance and party formation. After resigning from the Congress, he launched the Jai Samaikyandhra Party on March 10, 2014, to oppose the state's bifurcation. However, this new outfit failed to win any seats in subsequent elections and was dissolved in July 2018, at which point Reddy rejoined the Indian National Congress. By April 2023, he transitioned again, joining the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). His political journey began in 1989 after the passing of his father, Amaranath Reddy. He eventually lost his seat in 1994 during a period when the Congress party was defeated across Chittoor district.
Beyond his role as a chief minister, Reddy’s background is rooted in both sports and legislative service. A former cricketer who captained teams for Hyderabad under-22 and Osmania University, he was elected to the state assembly four times across various constituencies including Native Vayalpadu and Pileru. During his tenure, he was credited with launching several regional schemes, such as Mee Seva and Bangaru Thalli, while also serving as the Speaker of the 13th Andhra Pradesh Assembly in 2009. Reddy attended several prestigious institutions including Hyderabad Public School and Nizam College for his degree. His college years were spent as batch mates with Mohammad Azharuddin and Nandamuri Balakrishna.
