In short: Long before it was a bustling Philippine hub, Naga was a center for a unique pre-colonial industry. Using the abundant narra tree, local craftsmen produced wooden cups that turned water a celestial blue or yellow, creating a luxury export that traveled from the Manila-Acapulco Galleons to the courts of Europe.

Naga's identity is deeply rooted in the narra tree (Pterocarpus indicus), a name shared by the settlement itself. In the pre-colonial era, this region hosted a specialized industry producing wooden cups and bowls. When water was poured into these vessels, the wood's properties produced distinctive blue and yellow opalescent colors—a phenomenon known to Europeans as lignum nephriticum.

These items were highly prized in the West. During the Spanish colonial era, they were transported via the Manila-Acapulco Galleons to Mexico and eventually to Europe, where they were often presented as prestigious gifts to nobility. The Jesuit historian Juan José Delgado noted that even in Cadiz, Spain, such cups were used as medicinal remedies for ailments like hydropsy.

Strategically located on a tributary flowing from Mount Isarog to the Bicol River, the settlement of Naga was a regional powerhouse. It controlled trade routes between gold-mining barangays like Paracale and the rice-growing districts of Yraya. This economic strength was bolstered by a diverse pre-colonial society, including a noble class known as the maguino and a commoner class called the timagua.

The city's historical significance is reflected in its many titles. Known as the 'Queen City of Bicol' and the 'Heart of Bicol' due to its central location, it is also called the 'Pilgrim City' because it hosts one of Asia's largest Marian pilgrimages at the shrine of Our Lady of Peñafrancia. Today, it remains the most populous city in Camarines Sur, with a 2024 census population of 210,545.
