In short: Known as the sugarbowl of Uttar Pradesh, this industrial city sits in the fertile upper Ganga-Yamuna Doab region. Established in 1633, it has evolved from a Mughal-era settlement into a major commercial center, despite a complex history marked by both economic prosperity and significant communal tensions in recent decades.

Founded in 1633 by the son of Mughal Commander Sayyid Muzaffar Khan Barha, the city was once central to the Barah country. Its inhabitants, particularly those from near Jansath, were vital to the Mughal army and the personal cavalry of the influential Sayyid brothers, who acted as de-facto rulers of the empire during the 1710s. Today, the city remains a critical industrial and educational hub, serving as a key node within the Delhi-Mumbai and Amritsar-Delhi-Kolkata Industrial Corridors.

The city's economy is heavily defined by its agricultural output. It boasts the highest agricultural GDP in Uttar Pradesh and functions as the state's largest granary, supported by eight sugar mills. Beyond farming, the industrial landscape includes steel and paper production. This economic activity is facilitated by its strategic location on National Highway 58, which connects Delhi to the Himalayan regions of Uttarakhand, serving as a vital artery for both trade and tourism.

However, the city's modern history is also defined by volatility. In 1976, during the Emergency, police fired on protesters, resulting in 25 to 30 deaths. More recently, the 2013 riots between Hindus and Muslims led to 62 deaths and displaced over 50,000 people. These events have left a lasting impact on the region's social fabric. Despite these challenges, the city maintains a diverse demographic, with a population that is 55.79% Hindu and 41.39% Muslim, and continues to be a significant player in the regional economy.
