How a Polish King Transformed a Medieval French Town into a Baroque Masterpiece
In short: Nancy, the former capital of the Duchy of Lorraine, is a city defined by its dual identity. It balances a medieval Old Town with the ambitious, UNESCO-listed 18th-century urban planning of Stanislaus I of Poland. Today, it remains a vibrant hub of Art Nouveau innovation and advanced surgical robotics.
The origins of Nancy trace back to the 11th century, when Duke Gerard of Lorraine established a fortified town on the banks of the Meurthe. For centuries, it served as the ducal seat, surviving conflicts like the 1218 fire and the 1477 Battle of Nancy. The city's trajectory shifted significantly in 1736 when Emperor Charles VI arranged for his daughter Maria Theresa to marry Duke François of Lorraine, leading to the exchange of the duchy for Tuscany. The vacant territory was granted to the exiled Polish king Stanisław Leszczyński, whose patronage redefined the city's aesthetic.
Under Stanislaus, Nancy underwent a dramatic transformation. He commissioned the architect Emmanuel Héré to design the Place Stanislas, a grand square completed between 1752 and 1756 that bridged the medieval quarter with the newer urban developments. This site, along with the Place de la Carrière and Place d'Alliance, was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1983. Following the king's death in 1766, the region was formally annexed by France under King Louis XV, yet Nancy retained its status as a cultural and administrative center.
By the late 19th century, Nancy earned the nickname 'Capital of Eastern France.' It became a global epicenter for the Art Nouveau movement, driven by the École de Nancy. Led by figures like Émile Gallé and Victor Prouvé, this collective pushed boundaries in decorative arts, glasswork, and furniture design. Their legacy persists in the city's architecture and the specialized collections at the Musée de l'École de Nancy. Today, the city continues this tradition of innovation as a regional center for science and education, hosting the University of Lorraine and a renowned health center specializing in surgical robotics.
