In short: Andy Serkis returns to the role that defined his career, directing and starring in a film that bridges the gap between two legendary trilogies. By focusing on the internal struggle of the creature Gollum, the production aims to blend modern motion capture with the classic aesthetic of Peter Jackson's original vision.

The upcoming film, The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum, marks a significant return to the cinematic world of J.R.R. Tolkien. Set during the timeline of The Fellowship of the Ring, the narrative follows Gandalf as he tasks the ranger Strider with tracking down the elusive Gollum. Unlike previous entries, this story is told primarily from the perspective of the creature himself, offering a deep dive into his fractured psychology. Producers Peter Jackson, Fran Walsh, and Philippa Boyens, who were instrumental in the original trilogies, are overseeing the project to ensure it maintains the spirit of their earlier work.

Development began in earnest following a 2023 agreement between Warner Bros. Discovery and Middle-earth Enterprises. The production team, based in Wellington, New Zealand, has reunited many original crew members, including production designer Dan Hennah and illustrator John Howe. To achieve the desired visual fidelity, the film utilizes advanced motion capture techniques developed by Wētā FX for the Avatar and Planet of the Apes franchises. Additionally, the team is employing digital de-aging technology—referred to by Boyens as digital make-up—alongside traditional practical effects like miniatures and prosthetics to create a cohesive aesthetic.

The cast features a mix of returning icons and new talent. Ian McKellen reprises his role as Gandalf, while Elijah Wood returns as Frodo Baggins. Jamie Dornan takes on the role of Strider, portraying the character as a solitary, doomed ranger who has not yet fully embraced his identity as Aragorn. Other notable additions include Lee Pace, returning as Thranduil, alongside newcomers Leo Woodall and Anya Taylor-Joy. With principal photography running from July to October 2026, the film is scheduled for a theatrical release on 17 December 2027, aiming to expand the franchise while remaining distinct from other ongoing Middle-earth adaptations.
