From Dagestan to the UFC elite: The rise of striker Nassourdine Imavov
In short: Born in Khasavyurt and raised in the boxing gyms of France, Nassourdine Imavov has evolved into a top-ranked UFC middleweight contender. Known for his technical striking and versatile grappling, he now stands on the precipice of championship glory after a dominant run against some of the sport's most formidable names.
Nassourdine Imavov, born in 1995 to an ethnic Kumyk family in Dagestan, Russia, began his journey in combat sports after moving to Salon-de-Provence, France, at age nine. His transition to professional mixed martial arts in 2016 followed a path through the MMA Factory in Paris, where he refined the boxing-heavy style that defines his current approach. Standing 6-foot-3, Imavov utilizes a unique side-on, bouncy stance, prioritizing fast, precise punches and a dangerous, extended lead jab over traditional kicking-based distance management.
His UFC tenure, which began in 2020, has been marked by both tactical brilliance and logistical hurdles. While visa issues forced several withdrawals, his in-cage performances have solidified his status as a premier middleweight. Notable victories include a technical knockout of Jared Cannonier in 2024 and a standout performance against former two-time champion Israel Adesanya in 2025, which earned him his first Performance of the Night award. These wins have propelled him to the #3 spot in the Meta UFC middleweight rankings as of May 2026.
Imavov’s fighting style is characterized by a steady pace and an ability to seamlessly blend striking with offensive wrestling. He is particularly effective at controlling opponents against the cage and utilizing clinch work to land knees or defensive elbows. Having moved to the Venum Training Camp in late 2023 to train under Nicolas Ott, Imavov continues to evolve. He is currently scheduled to challenge for the UFC Middleweight Championship against Sean Strickland in December 2026, a rematch of their 2023 bout that serves as the culmination of his steady climb through the division.
