From Uzbekistan to the UFC: The rise of a mixed martial arts champion
In short: Nursulton Ruziboev’s journey to the pinnacle of professional fighting is defined by a diverse technical foundation. By blending karate, combat sambo, and high-level boxing into his arsenal, he has carved out a path from Uzbekistan's regional tournaments to the global stage of the UFC.
Born in Shahrixon, Uzbekistan, in 1993, Ruziboev began his martial arts journey at age 7 or 8 with karate. This early start was supplemented by training in combat sambo during his youth before he transitioned into dedicated mixed martial arts (MMA) training at age 16. His path to the octagon was not linear; in 2012, he moved to Russia to work and support his family, eventually returning to Uzbekistan in 2013 to compete in hand-to-hand combat tournaments.
Ruziboev's professional career began in Kazakhstan’s Alash Pride organization in 2014. He quickly established himself as a formidable competitor, winning titles in the Open Fighting Championship and multiple Middleweight Championships with WEF Global. His resume includes appearances in major organizations like Brave Combat Federation and Absolute Championship Berkut before he signed with the UFC in 2023.
Since his debut, Ruziboev has demonstrated versatility across weight classes, competing in both Welterweight and Middleweight divisions. He made an immediate impact on the UFC stage by winning a first-round knockout against Brunno Ferreira, earning 'Performance of the Night' honors. While he has faced setbacks—including a unanimous decision loss to Joaquin Buckley and several withdrawals due to injury or unknown reasons—he remains a top contender, recently securing a submission victory over Andrey Pulyaev in 2026.
His career serves as a testament to the globalization of MMA. By balancing his athletic pursuits with academic achievements, such as earning a master's degree from Uzbekistan National University, Ruziboev exemplifies a modern era of fighters who navigate complex international paths to reach elite status.
