A historic milestone for Canadian soccer in Europe's elite leagues
In short: Nathan Saliba didn't just join a top-tier European club; he helped break a continental record. His move to La Liga marked the first time any club in one of Europe's five major leagues featured three Canadian players simultaneously.
Born in Longueuil, Quebec, Nathan Saliba is a product of diverse heritage, with parents from Haiti and roots in both Haitian Creole, French, and English. His path to the elite level began at age nine with CS Longueuil before he joined the Montreal Impact Academy in 2017. He signed his first professional contract with CF Montréal (formerly Montreal Impact) in December 2020, making a debut for the first team on February 25, 2023.
Saliba's progression was marked by persistence. In 2023, he chose to fight for a first-team spot over taking a loan to the Canadian Premier League. This resolve paid off as he rose through the ranks, eventually earning a move to Belgian Pro League club Anderlecht in June 2025. After scoring his first goal for Anderlecht on July 27, 2025, he moved again in August 2026 to join Villarreal.
Villarreal made history by signing him, as it became the initial instance where a top-five European league side featured three Canadians—Saliba, Tajon Buchanan, and Tani Oluwaseyi—within their primary roster. On the international stage, Saliba became a hero during the 2026 FIFA World Cup co-hosted by Canada, Mexico, and the United States. He scored a free-kick in Canada's first-ever World Cup win against Qatar on June 18, 2026, and helped lead the team to its first-ever knockout stage appearance.
Saliba's rapid ascent is underscored by his accolades. After earning 2024 Canada Soccer Young Player of the Year honours, he played during the 2025 CONCACAF Gold Cup prior to playing a key role in the nation's landmark World Cup journey.
