How a Canadian teenager from Brampton became a trailblazer in Europe's elite soccer leagues
In short: Tajon Buchanan has redefined Canadian soccer, evolving from a youth prospect in Ontario to a record-breaking presence in Italy and Spain. His journey, marked by rapid international transfers and historic milestones, highlights the rising global influence of Canadian talent on the world stage of professional football.
Born in Brampton in 1999, Tajon Buchanan began his path at age eight before moving to Colorado at 15 to join the Real Colorado academy. His collegiate career at Syracuse University lasted two years, during which he tallied 12 goals and six assists in 33 appearances. This performance led him to the 2019 MLS SuperDraft, where he was selected ninth overall by the New England Revolution.
Buchanan’s professional trajectory accelerated quickly. After a standout 2021 season, he signed with Club Brugge for a record-breaking $7 million transfer fee. By 2024, he reached Serie A, joining Inter Milan for a reported €7 million plus add-ons, becoming the first Canadian to play in the Italian top flight. He further cemented his legacy in May 2024 by becoming the first Canadian to score a goal in Serie A during a match against Frosinone.
His career reached new heights in Spain after joining Villarreal in 2025. In August of that year, he achieved a significant milestone by netting three goals in a single game against Girona. This feat made him the first player from Canada to record a hat-trick in La Liga and only the second Canadian to achieve such a performance in any of Europe's top five leagues. Despite facing setbacks, including a broken tibia during the 2024 Copa América, Buchanan remains a pivotal figure for the Canadian national team, having assisted the country's first-ever men's World Cup goal in 2022.
