From third-party protest to a historic parliamentary supermajority
In short: In just four years, Sri Lanka's National People's Power transformed from an electorally weak fringe group into a political juggernaut. By leveraging a massive wave of public dissatisfaction, this left-wing alliance shattered long-standing records to become the first single party to achieve a supermajority since 1977.
The National People's Power (NPP) was established in 2019 as a coalition of 21 diverse groups, including the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna, trade unions, and women's rights organizations. Its primary goal was to offer a progressive alternative to the existing political establishment. However, its early influence was marginal; in the 2020 parliamentary elections, the NPP secured only 3 seats, remaining a minor third party while the SLPP achieved a landslide victory.
The tide turned during the 2022 Sri Lankan protests, fueled by an economic crisis and widespread frustration with the incumbent government. This surge in popular support culminated in the 2024 presidential election, where Anura Kumara Dissanayake won a plurality of 42.31% in the first round and eventually secured 55.89% of the total vote. Following his inauguration, Dissanayake fulfilled a campaign pledge by dissolving parliament and calling for snap elections on November 14, 2024.
The results were unprecedented. The NPP won 159 out of 225 seats, securing a supermajority and winning every electoral district except Batticaloa. They achieved a record-breaking 61.56% of the total vote, surpassing the previous 2010 record. Notably, the party became the first non-Tamil political party to win the Jaffna District. Ideologically, the NPP promotes a unique economic model based on socialist principles, rejecting both neoliberalism and classical socialism in favor of state involvement in key sectors like energy and national security.
The 2024 election also marked a milestone for representation, with 19 of the record-breaking 21 female MPs belonging to the NPP. Additionally, Vijitha Herath set a new national record for preferential votes with 716,715, significantly surpassing previous records held by prominent figures like Ranil Wickremesinghe and Mahinda Rajapaksa.
