The gang that traded its skinhead roots for a crime empire
In short: Born as a small group of skinheads in the 1970s California Youth Authority, the Nazi Lowriders evolved into a sophisticated criminal syndicate. They didn't just adopt a name; they engineered a strategic takeover of the white prison underground to build a multi-state narcotics and violence network.
The Nazi Lowriders (NLR) originated in the early-to-mid 1970s within California's youth correctional system. They were initially created by members of the Aryan Brotherhood (AB), the state's leading white gang, to serve as 'middlemen.' By the late 1970s or early 1980s, AB leader John Stinson began recruiting skinheads from facilities like the Preston Youth Correctional Facility and the Youth Training School in Chino. This allowed the AB to outsource criminal operations while the NLR grew into a distinct entity.
The gang's rise was fueled by a strategic shift in law enforcement priorities. During California's initial 1990s crackdown against the Aryan Brotherhood, the Nazi Lowriders emerged to replace them as the state's leading European-American inmate clique. By 2000, the FBI estimated the group had grown from just 28 confirmed members in 1996 to approximately 1,500 inmates in the state prison system alone. This expansion was mirrored on the streets, where they established a presence across Southern, Central, and Northern California.
The organization's identity is built on 'one-upmanship.' While their name references White supremacy, the 'Lowriders' suffix is a deliberate play on terms used by Hispanic gangs. Interestingly, while the group champions Whiteness to recruit skinheads, its upper echelon contains many Hispanic-Americans of Spanish descent or those who are at least half Caucasian. Their operations are highly organized, involving three-tier prison hierarchies and alliances with groups like the Hells Angels and Ku Klux Klan. Today, they remain a significant threat in drug distribution and violent crime across several states.
The gang's violence is well-documented by law enforcement. Notable incidents include 1996 hate crimes in Lancaster, California, and a 2001 drive-by shooting in Indianapolis that left an African American girl wounded. Their criminal reach includes the production of methamphetamine and large-scale racketeering, which led to a major federal indictment in 2002 involving twelve members charged with murder, extortion, and conspiracy.
