The Dutch football club that reached six national cup finals but never won one.
In short: NEC Nijmegen is a storied Dutch football club defined by a peculiar paradox: consistent presence in top-tier competition and a haunting inability to secure the KNVB Cup. Despite reaching six finals across eight decades, the trophy has remained elusive, marking a history of near-misses and dramatic, high-stakes heartbreak.
Formed in 1900 by working-class residents of Nijmegen, the club initially struggled for legitimacy and funds. After merging with NVV Nijmegen in 1910, the club eventually settled at the Goffertstadion in 1942. This stadium, opened in 1939, was built by unemployed citizens and was once the third-largest in the Netherlands. The club's journey through the Dutch league structure has been volatile, characterized by frequent relegations and promotions that earned them a reputation as a classic yo-yo club.
The club's relationship with the KNVB Cup is particularly poignant. They first reached the final in 1973, entering as favorites only to lose 2–0. Subsequent appearances in 1983, 1994, 2000, 2024, and 2026 all ended in defeat. The 1983 final was especially notable for being the final match of Johan Cruyff's career for Ajax. Despite these domestic struggles, the club has experienced flashes of European glory, most famously a 1983 Cup Winners' Cup tie against Barcelona, where they briefly led 2–0 before falling to the Spanish giants.
Financial instability has been a recurring theme, leading to bankruptcy in 1987, which was only averted when creditors waived 80% of their claims. However, the club has seen remarkable turnarounds, such as the 2007–08 season where a mid-season surge led to European qualification. More recently, the club has found stability, culminating in a historic third-place finish in the 2025–26 Eredivisie season, which secured a spot in the Champions League preliminary phase, signaling a potential shift in their historical trajectory.
