In short: Nevado de Toluca, a massive stratovolcano in central Mexico, hides a complex history within its crater. Once a site of intense pre-Hispanic ritual activity, the mountain’s summit lakes served as ceremonial offerings grounds, while its peaks acted as observatories for priests to predict the vital agricultural growing seasons.

Standing as the fourth-highest peak in Mexico, Nevado de Toluca is defined by a 1.5-kilometre wide summit caldera. While its modern appearance is characterized by the twin peaks of Pico del Fraile and Pico del Aguila, the mountain was once significantly taller. Geological evidence suggests that roughly 25,000 years ago, a catastrophic eruption blasted away the top of the cone, reducing its height by as much as 900 metres and blanketing the surrounding landscape in thick lahars.

The volcano’s most recent major activity occurred approximately 10,500 years ago. This Plinian eruption, with a Volcanic Explosivity Index of 6, was comparable in scale to the 1991 eruption of Mount Pinatubo. It deposited vast quantities of pumice across the region, even burying mammoth bones in the basin of Mexico. Following this event, a volcanic plug known as El Ombligo formed in the vent, effectively rendering the volcano inactive.

Beyond its geological violence, the crater served as a profound cultural hub. Archeological excavations, including a major 2010 project, have uncovered 18 distinct sites within the national park. These findings reveal that the crater was a ritual center during the Epi-Classic and Post-Classic periods. Astronomer priests utilized features like El Mirador to track the sun’s zenith, while the lakes—Lago del Sol and Lago de la Luna—became repositories for offerings such as copal, ceramics, and sculpted stones. Today, the area remains a protected site, though it faces ongoing challenges regarding the preservation of its fragile archeological heritage.
