In short: The Athletics are trading their long-standing Oakland home for a high-tech, climate-controlled stadium on the Las Vegas Strip. Scheduled to open in 2028, this $2 billion project aims to redefine the fan experience with a retractable roof and a massive cable-net window, marking a new era for professional baseball.

The journey to the New Las Vegas Stadium began after negotiations to replace the aging Oakland Coliseum collapsed in 2023. Following a legislative push led by Nevada Governor Joe Lombardo, the project secured public funding and a permanent home on the site of the iconic Tropicana Las Vegas. The Tropicana, which stood for 67 years, was demolished by implosion in October 2024 to clear space for the new facility and its surrounding hotel towers.

Designed by the Bjarke Ingels Group and HNTB, the stadium features a distinctive spherical architecture often compared to an armadillo. The structure is engineered to be climate-controlled, utilizing a retractable roof to balance the need for an open-air atmosphere with protection against the intense desert heat. Beyond the field, the site will integrate a three-acre plaza and a massive cable-net window facing Las Vegas Boulevard, creating a visual landmark that mirrors the scale of the city's famous resorts.

Financing for the project has evolved significantly, with total costs rising to an estimated $2 billion by late 2025. While $380 million in public funds were initially earmarked, the Athletics have relied on private investment and partnerships, including a long-term food-and-beverage contract with Aramark. Construction officially commenced in May 2025, and despite the complexity of the build, reports from early 2026 indicated the project remained ahead of its construction schedule.

This move marks a historic shift for the Athletics, who have not occupied a stadium without another sports tenant since 1909. The facility is expected to host more than just baseball, with potential for events like the National Finals Rodeo. By the time it opens in 2028, the stadium will serve as a centerpiece of a larger development, featuring thousands of hotel rooms and a casino resort, cementing the team's transition into the heart of the Las Vegas entertainment landscape.
