In short: Recorded in just four days at the legendary Abbey Road Studios, Paul McCartney and Wings captured a raw, live-in-studio performance in 1974. Intended only for private assessment, the footage and audio remained unreleased for decades. Now, this long-lost session has finally surfaced, offering a rare glimpse into a pivotal creative era.

In August 1974, Paul McCartney and his band, Wings, gathered at Abbey Road Studios—then known as EMI Studios—to record a live-in-studio album and film. The project, titled One Hand Clapping, was directed by photographer David Litchfield. McCartney initially requested that the sessions be captured on videotape rather than film, viewing the project as a private record to assess the band's performance quality. The lineup featured Paul and Linda McCartney, guitarist Denny Laine, and new recruits Jimmy McCulloch and drummer Geoff Britton, who had joined shortly before the recording of Band on the Run.

The technical limitations of 1970s videotape proved challenging. Litchfield found the footage difficult to edit without significant loss of quality, which contributed to the project remaining shelved for nearly half a century. While the audio was praised for its brilliance, the visual material was eventually transferred to film to facilitate editing. Despite the band members feeling they were exceptionally tight after a period of rehearsal, the project was abandoned as a commercial release at the time. Various tracks were later trickled out as bonus material on archive reissues, but the complete album did not see an official release until 14 June 2024.

The 2024 release of One Hand Clapping was met with critical interest, with some reviewers highlighting the spirited energy of the performances and others noting the heavy use of synthesizers. The album's arrival marked a significant milestone for the group, entering the UK Official Albums Chart at number 10 on 21 June 2024. This achievement made it the band's first top 10 album in 45 years, a feat not accomplished since the 1979 release of Back to the Egg. The project stands as a testament to a post-Beatles creative high, finally transitioning from a private band assessment to a public historical document.
