In short: New Mexico United captured local hearts immediately upon its 2019 debut, leading the league in attendance. Yet, the club faced an unprecedented challenge in 2020 when pandemic restrictions forced them to play every single match away from home, earning them the enduring nickname the Road Warriors.

Founded on June 6, 2018, by Peter Trevisani, New Mexico United represents the latest chapter in Albuquerque's professional soccer history. Previous attempts to establish a foothold in the state, such as the New Mexico Chiles in the 1990s and the Albuquerque Geckos, struggled with financial instability and eventual relocation. In contrast, New Mexico United prioritized community engagement from the start, soliciting fan input for its name and colors, and launching the Somos Unidos Foundation in 2020 to serve as a charitable arm.

The club's identity is deeply rooted in local symbolism. Its crest features a yellow shield adorned with four black lines representing the Zia symbol, used with permission from the Zia people. This visual connection to the state flag helped the team differentiate itself from other local sports entities. Since its inception, the club has played at Isotopes Park, a baseball stadium shared with the Albuquerque Isotopes. While the team has long sought a soccer-specific venue, efforts to fund a new stadium through public bonds faced significant hurdles, including a rejected ballot measure in 2021 before the city council finally approved a new site at Balloon Fiesta Park in August 2024.

Competitive success has been a hallmark of the organization, which competes in the USL Championship. The team's 2019 inaugural season was marked by high attendance and a notable run in the U.S. Open Cup, where they defeated two Major League Soccer clubs. The 2020 season, however, remains the most unique in the club's history. Due to strict statewide health orders during the COVID-19 pandemic, the team was unable to host games, forcing them to play all 15 regular-season matches and two playoff games on the road. Despite these logistical constraints, the team maintained a competitive record, eventually reaching the Western Conference Semifinals.
