How a Mexico City football club became a business empire and national powerhouse
In short: Founded by students in 1916, Club América evolved from a local squad into a dominant commercial and sporting force. Owned by media giant Televisa since 1959, the club has secured a record number of domestic and international titles, becoming a central, albeit polarizing, pillar of Mexican football culture and finance.
Club América was established on 12 October 1916 in Mexico City, born from the merger of two college teams, Récord and Colón. The name was suggested by Pedro Quintanilla to honor Columbus Day. By 1924, the club secured its first Primera Fuerza title, beginning a legacy of success that would eventually see it become the most decorated team in Mexican football history. The club’s identity was solidified by its iconic yellow and navy blue kit, designed by Rafael Garza, who later became a key figure in the development of the Mexican national team.
The club's trajectory shifted dramatically in 1959 when it was acquired by Emilio Azcárraga Milmo, the owner of Telesistema Mexicano. Azcárraga famously declared that while he knew little about football, he understood business, effectively transforming the club into a corporate enterprise. This transition coincided with the club's residency at Estadio Azteca, the largest stadium in Latin America. Under this ownership, the club entered its 'golden decade' in the 1980s, winning five league titles and establishing a fierce rivalry with Guadalajara, known as El Súper Clásico.
Today, Club América stands as a financial and sporting titan. Valued at approximately US$770 million as of May 2025, it made history in 2024 as the first football club floated on the Mexican Stock Exchange. Its trophy cabinet is unrivaled, holding a record sixteen league titles, six Copa México titles, and a record seven CONCACAF Champions League crowns. Despite periods of volatility—including a near-relegation scare in the 1950s and a difficult 2008 season—the club remains a dominant force, consistently topping all-time league tables for victories and points.
The club's influence extends beyond the pitch, as it was named the best North American club of the first decade of the 21st century by the International Federation of Football History & Statistics. While it remains a lightning rod for intense rivalry, its institutional stability and commercial success have cemented its status as a unique entity in global sports, bridging the gap between traditional athletic competition and modern corporate media management.
