How a relocated franchise achieved Mexican football glory in record time
In short: In 2011, Club Tijuana ascended to Mexico's top flight. Within just eighteen months, they had secured a league title, completing one of the most rapid rises in the history of Liga MX. This is the story of a club built on ambition, strategic relocation, and a stadium designed for growth.
The origins of Club Tijuana Xoloitzcuintles de Caliente are rooted in a strategic takeover. Following the short-lived existence of Gallos Caliente in 2006, businessmen purchased the Guerreros de Tabasco franchise and moved it to Baja California. Under the leadership of Jorge Alberto Hank, who served alongside vice president Gog Murguia Fernandez as the youngest executives in Mexican top-tier football history, the club established its identity. Their badge pays homage to the hairless Xoloitzcuintle dog, a symbol linked to the club's founder, Jorge Hank.
The club's ascent was remarkably efficient. After competing in the second tier, they secured promotion to the Primera División on May 21, 2011, by defeating Irapuato with a 2–1 aggregate victory in the Campeón de Ascenso. The momentum did not stall in the top flight; the Xolos achieved a Liga MX title in the 2012–13 season, marking the shortest time to a top-flight title following promotion in Mexican history. This period was defined by defensive dominance, notably during the 2012 Clausura when they allowed only 11 goals in 17 matches.
Infrastructure played a vital role in their regulatory success. The Estadio Caliente, inaugurated on November 11, 2007, was expanded in stages to meet the Mexican Football Federation's requirements for top-division play. While the stadium's capacity grew from an initial 13,333 to 20,000, the club also navigated complexities regarding its ties to the sports betting industry. Today, the club remains one of only seven Mexican teams that have never faced relegation, and they continue to expand their influence through international partnerships, such as their 2024 agreement with San Diego FC.
