How a sprawling commuter hub became Taiwan's most populous and powerful industrial engine
In short: New Taipei City is a massive, polycentric urban area that completely surrounds the capital. Once a collection of disparate towns and rural districts, it has evolved into a global manufacturing powerhouse, producing over half the world's motherboards and notebooks while anchoring Taiwan's high-tech and green energy future.
New Taipei City is a unique conurbation, formed by merging various regiopolis, suburban business districts, and commuter towns into one continuous urban landscape. As of January 2023, it houses over 4 million people, making it the most populous city in Taiwan. While it completely encloses the capital city of Taipei, it maintains its own distinct identity and administrative structure, centered in the Banqiao District. The city's geography is as varied as its history, stretching from northern coastlines to the mountainous Xueshan Range, encompassing the entire Taipei Basin.
The region's economic significance is immense. It serves as a secondary business hub to Taipei, hosting over 250,000 private companies and 20,000 factories with a total capital of NT$1.8 trillion. The city is a global leader in information technology, securing more than 50% of the world market share for critical components like notebooks, motherboards, and LCD monitors. Major industry giants, including Foxconn and Giant Bicycles, operate from within its borders, while its industrial parks focus on biotechnology, precision instruments, and digital content.
Historically, the area has undergone profound transformations. Originally inhabited by indigenous peoples like the Ketagalan, the region saw significant migration from mainland China starting in the 17th century. By the 1890s, the port of Tamsui was a vital trade gateway, accounting for 63 percent of Taiwan's total trade. After decades as Taipei County, the region was officially promoted to special municipal status on 25 December 2010. Today, the city is aggressively pursuing a 'Green Future City' initiative, promoting smart electric vehicles and cleaner production methods to balance its heavy industrial output with sustainable development.
