How a Chinese county transformed from a rural backwater into a global tech powerhouse
In short: Kunshan has evolved from a marshy, schistosomiasis-ridden agricultural region into the wealthiest county-level city in China. By pivoting toward an export-oriented economy and attracting massive Taiwanese investment, it became a high-tech hub. Today, this city balances its ancient cultural roots in Kunqu opera with cutting-edge semiconductor and biomedical manufacturing.
Historically, Kunshan was defined by its challenging geography. Low-lying polder fields and marshlands often made the area difficult to manage, leading to periods of hydraulic failure and environmental crisis. By the 1920s, the region faced severe social polarization, with landless tenant farmers accounting for 77% of the population. The area also suffered from high rates of schistosomiasis, a parasitic disease that thrived in the local reed-filled landscape. It was not until the 1970s, following intensive medical and environmental campaigns, that the infection rate was brought under control, eventually leading to the elimination of new local cases by 1986.
The city's modern trajectory began in the late 20th century when it pivoted toward an export-oriented economy. Leveraging its proximity to Shanghai, Kunshan attracted significant foreign capital, particularly from Taiwan. By 2020, the city hosted over 100,000 Taiwanese residents, earning it the nickname Little Taiwan. This influx of investment helped propel Kunshan to the top of China's economic rankings; in 2016, it recorded the highest GDP of any county-level city in the country, reaching 316 billion RMB.
Today, Kunshan is a sophisticated industrial center focused on optoelectronics, semiconductors, and intelligent manufacturing. Despite this rapid industrialization, the city maintains a strong connection to its heritage. It is the birthplace of Kunqu, an elite form of Chinese opera that dominated theater for centuries. Modern urban planning initiatives, such as the 2017-2035 Master Plan, aim to integrate this cultural legacy with smart city infrastructure, ensuring that Kunshan remains a hub for both global technology entrepreneurs and traditional arts.
