How Nintendo replaced the traditional press conference with its own global digital stage
In short: Nintendo Direct transformed how the company communicates, moving from crowded trade show stages to direct, curated online broadcasts. By bypassing traditional industry events, Nintendo gained total control over its messaging, allowing executives to speak directly to fans and deliver tailored updates on games and hardware across the globe.
The Nintendo Direct platform launched on October 21, 2011, in Japan and North America. Initially, these presentations were often hosted by Nintendo president Satoru Iwata, who famously delivered content in both English and Japanese. Following his death in 2015, the company shifted its hosting strategy, eventually settling on a rotation between Senior General Manager Yoshiaki Koizumi and Executive General Manager Shinya Takahashi starting in 2017.
The transition away from traditional E3 press conferences began in 2013. Nintendo CEO Satoru Iwata argued that the Direct format allowed the company to deliver messages more effectively to diverse groups of people. Industry observers noted that Nintendo's final E3 press conference in 2012 suffered from a disjointed focus on both new hardware and software, which failed to excite fans. By adopting the Direct model, Nintendo could bypass the constraints of trade show schedules, providing more frequent, focused updates while increasing the visibility of its leadership.
While the platform has evolved, it remains a complex operation of localization and regional branding. Since 2017, main international Directs are typically produced in Japan, with English narration or subtitles added for global audiences. The COVID-19 pandemic further influenced these formats, forcing shifts toward subtitled presentations for certain series, such as those hosted by Masahiro Sakurai. Even as major industry events like E3 were permanently discontinued in December 2023, Nintendo has maintained its independence, often scheduling its own showcases around the time of other industry events like Summer Game Fest without formally partnering with them.
Beyond general updates, the platform has expanded to include specialized content like 'Indie World' showcases and title-specific deep dives. These presentations often feature the creators themselves, such as Shigeru Miyamoto or Masahiro Sakurai, reinforcing the company's strategy of connecting developers directly with their audience. This shift has fundamentally changed how the company manages its public image, turning every announcement into a controlled, global event.
