In short: After achieving fame with the Ori series, Moon Studios pivoted to a complex, Soulslike action RPG. No Rest for the Wicked trades allegorical tales for a dark, political saga set on the island of Isola Sacra, featuring a painting-inspired aesthetic and a deep, animation-driven combat system.

Development of No Rest for the Wicked began in 2018, shortly after the team finished work on the definitive edition of their previous title. The project was initially ambitious, but the studio paused full production because they felt unprepared for the technical demands of 3D RPG systems and online multiplayer. While the majority of the 80-person team focused on their next Ori project, a small group continued to refine the core concepts. The game utilizes a customized Unity engine and incorporates design lessons from the Wellspring Glades area of their previous work, significantly expanding those town-management mechanics.

The game’s visual identity draws heavily from the work of Italian painter Caravaggio, prioritizing high saturation and dramatic contrasts between light and shadow. Creative director Thomas Mahler explicitly rejected photorealism, fearing it would undermine the game's unique character. The combat system is similarly deliberate; it is animation-driven, requiring players to study enemy movements to time their strikes, parries, and dodges. This focus on strategy over button-mashing is supported by a stamina system and a soft class structure that allows for fluid experimentation across seven distinct attribute domains.

Beyond combat, the game features a persistent settlement called Sacrament, which evolves based on player actions. Players can gather resources to craft gear, furnish homes, and contribute to town upgrades. The narrative, influenced by Shakespeare and A Song of Ice and Fire, follows a holy Cerim warrior battling a plague known as the Pestilence. Following a successful early access launch in April 2024, the title saw significant commercial momentum, surpassing two million copies sold by July 2026. After a complex transition involving publishing rights shifting from Private Division back to Moon Studios, the full release is scheduled for March 2027.
