How a Long Island village literally paved the streets of New York City
In short: Northport, New York, is more than a scenic harbor town. Beneath its quiet Victorian charm lies a history of industrial transformation, from a bustling nineteenth-century shipbuilding hub to a major source of the sand that built the sidewalks of New York City during the early twentieth century.
Originally inhabited by the Matinecocks, who called the area Opcathontyche, the land was sold to English settlers in 1656. For generations, it was known as Great Cow Harbour, reflecting its early identity as a rural farming community where cattle grazed near the water. By the 1830s, however, the village began a rapid transition toward shipbuilding, a primary industry that flourished for fifty years before the rise of steel-hulled vessels rendered wooden ship construction obsolete.
The village's industrial legacy took a unique turn in 1923 with the start of sand mining operations at Steer's Pit. This massive excavation, carved into the cliffs near the harbor, provided the raw material for much of New York City's infrastructure. When mixed with Portland cement and aggregate, the sand from these cliffs became the very sidewalks used by millions in the city. Mining ceased in the 1950s, and the site has since been repurposed for community use, including youth sports fields and fire department training facilities.
Today, Northport maintains a strong connection to its past through annual traditions like Cow Harbor Day, which commemorates its agricultural origins. While the village is now known for its historic Main Street and the prominent smokestacks of a major oil-fueled power station, it remains a place defined by its geography. From the remnants of an early twentieth-century trolley line to the preservation of its oldest standing home, the 1761 Skidmore House, the village continues to balance its evolution with a commitment to its local heritage.
