Nearly half of this historic Long Island village is actually covered by water
In short: Sea Cliff, New York, is a unique village where Victorian architecture meets the shoreline. While it is famous for its nineteenth-century resort homes, nearly 45 percent of its total area is water. Beyond its geography, it serves as a quiet, independent community with a rich history of local governance.
Incorporated in 1883, Sea Cliff was established to secure home rule and local control over its affairs. Located in Nassau County on Long Island, the village spans 2.0 square miles, though only 1.1 square miles is land. The remaining 0.9 square miles—roughly 44.67 percent of the total area—consists of water, defining the village's character as a coastal enclave within the Town of Oyster Bay.
The village is celebrated for its architectural heritage, particularly its collection of late Victorian houses. Many of these structures were originally built as summer residences during the community's era as a resort town. Today, several of these properties are listed on the National Register of Historic Places, including the complex that houses the village government, the Sea Cliff Village Library, and the Sea Cliff Museum.
Governance in Sea Cliff is managed by a Board of Trustees, consisting of an elected mayor and four trustees. The village maintains its own municipal library, which is part of the broader Nassau Library System. Education is provided through the North Shore Central School District, which includes the local Sea Cliff School, a facility that transitioned from serving as the community's sole school to an elementary school following a 1953 district merger.
The village has maintained a stable, small-town identity, though it occasionally enters the spotlight. In March 2025, for instance, the village made headlines during a dispute involving a false claim to the mayoralty. Despite such moments, Sea Cliff remains a distinct entity, anchored by its history, its unique climate, and its commitment to maintaining its own administrative and cultural institutions.
