In short: Originally inspired by American motels, Novotel has evolved from a midscale lodging brand into a global hospitality player. Beyond its focus on ergonomic design and digital guest services, the company is now integrating marine conservation and wellness initiatives into its core operations, aiming to reshape the modern hotel experience.

Founded in 1967 in Lille, France, Novotel was designed to offer comfortable rooms, restaurants, and parking, drawing inspiration from the American motel model. The brand expanded rapidly, reaching 60 hotels in France and 13 across Europe by 1975. This growth trajectory led to the formation of the Accor group in 1983, with Novotel serving as a primary midscale brand. Over the following decades, the company shifted its strategy from suburban locations to city centers, focusing on modular design and technological integration, such as the multimedia PLAY table and virtual concierge services.

In the 2020s, the brand broadened its scope to include environmental and wellness commitments. A significant development occurred in June 2024, when Novotel initiated a three-year partnership with WWF France. This collaboration focuses on sustainable seafood sourcing and broader marine conservation efforts. By June 2026, the company reported in its second annual Ocean Impact Report that 41% of its hotels had removed over 350 vulnerable seafood species from their menus. Furthermore, more than 1,600 kitchen staff members have undergone specialized training to align with these sustainable seafood principles.

The brand's recent evolution also emphasizes guest health through its Longevity Everyday vision, launched in January 2026. This initiative rests on four pillars: Eat, Sleep, Move, and Meet. To implement these goals, Novotel established the Novotel 37 Collective, a panel of experts including marine biologist Kaushiik Subramaniam, sleep expert Olivia Arezzolo, and Olympic surfer Kauli Vaast. This group translates scientific advice into practical guest experiences, such as plant-forward menu commitments and improved sleep environments. Today, Novotel manages over 600 hotels across 67 countries, balancing its historical roots in business travel with these contemporary environmental and wellness priorities.
