A 60-year-old design flaw turned a railway station into a death trap
In short: The Novi Sad railway station canopy didn't just fail; it was structurally predisposed to collapse. While a 2021 renovation was underway, a hidden architectural choice from 1964—suspending heavy concrete from a slender roof—created a ticking clock of fatigue and corrosion that eventually claimed 16 lives.
The station was built in 1964 with a bold, structurally advanced design featuring a corrugated concrete roof that cantilevers over the entrance. To create a canopy, engineers suspended massive reinforced concrete beams from this roof using steel tension elements. However, the design was intentionally slender, making it inherently prone to concrete degradation and fatigue because it was tasked with supporting a heavy suspended structure.
Experts estimated the service life of these specific materials to be no more than 50 years. By the early 2000s, the station was already considered decrepit. Although a renovation began in 2021 with support from China's Belt and Road Initiative, the front-entrance canopy was not reconstructed; it received only a "conservation treatment" to preserve its visual identity, as structural engineering was outside the scope of the heritage preservation guidelines.
The collapse on November 1, 2024, is attributed by many experts to severe corrosion of the prestressing wires in the hangers. Professor Nenad Ivanišević noted that about 40% of the hangers were affected, likely due to inadequate protection during the original 1960s construction. Because the corrosion occurred in a short, internal section of the roof, it was invisible to visual inspections. This hidden decay meant the structure could appear perfectly healthy until it reached a breaking point.
The disaster sparked mass protests across Serbia, fueled by allegations of government corruption and media censorship. While the High Court dropped charges against several officials, including construction minister Goran Vesić, in December 2025 due to insufficient evidence, the Court of Appeal continues to review the decision. The event remains a stark example of how aesthetic preservation can mask fatal structural vulnerabilities.
