The secret civilization of sperm whales governed by memory and care
In short: Follow the life of Lana, a newborn whale, to discover a hidden society of deep-sea giants. This documentary reveals how these mammals form complex clans built on emotional bonds and the transmission of knowledge.
The film explores the social structures of sperm whales, highlighting individuals like Germine, a nurse who cares for all newborns, and Pitted Back, an aging grandmother raising her grandson after losing her own calf. These relationships illustrate a society shaped by survival and collective learning.
By tracking specific family members—including the shy Arthur and the powerful adult male Jonas—the narrative reveals how these whales maintain lineages and roles within their clans across thousands of families roaming the oceans.
