How a single language can make dissent literally impossible

Oceania Revealed: Exploring George Orwell's 1984 with| Sleep State · 36:22 · Video: Sleep State · Watch at the source

In short: In George Orwell's terrifying vision of Oceania, the state does not just monitor your actions; it seeks to colonize your very thoughts. Through the strategic destruction of vocabulary and the psychological mastery of contradiction, the Party aims to create a world where rebellion is not just illegal, but unthinkable.

Written in 1948 by Eric Blair—better known by his pseudonym George Orwell—the world of 1984 was shaped by the immediate aftermath of World War II and the rising shadows of fascism and Stalinism. Orwell imagined a planet split between three conflicting superstates: Eastasia, Eurasia, and Oceania. The massive territory of Oceania encompasses Australia, the Americas, parts of southern Africa, and Great Britain, now called Airstrip One.

The regime, governed by the ideology of Ingsoc (English Socialism), maintains control through a rigid social hierarchy. At the summit sits the Inner Party, followed by the Outer Party members, who live under the unceasing gaze of the Thought Police and telescreens. The vast majority of the population, the proles, make up 85 percent of Oceania. The Party deliberately keeps this group in a state of poverty and ignorance, viewing them as a non-threat so long as they remain disenfranchised and do not revolt.

Control is exerted through the manipulation of reality and the four central ministries: Truth (propaganda and historical revision), Peace (perpetual war), Love (torture and brainwashing), and Plenty (economic scarcity). Perhaps most insidious is the development of Newspeak, a linguistic tool designed to narrow the range of thought by removing the words necessary for dissent. This is paired with Doublethink, the psychological ability to accept two contradictory beliefs as simultaneously true, ensuring that the Party's slogans—such as 'war is peace'—become an unshakeable reality.
