Guadeloupe's primary aviation gateway is a surprisingly capable hub for the world's largest jets.
In short: Located in Abymes, the Guadeloupe Maryse Condé Airport serves as the archipelago's largest aviation facility. While it functions as a regional hub for Air Caraïbes and a base for Air France, its infrastructure is robust enough to accommodate the massive Airbus A380, a feat it demonstrated as early as 2006.
Known officially as Guadeloupe Maryse Condé Airport and historically as Aérodrome de Pointe-à-Pitre Le Raizet, this facility sits just over two kilometers north-northeast of Pointe-à-Pitre on the island of Grande-Terre. Positioned at an elevation of 35 feet above mean sea level, the airport operates a single paved runway, designated 12/30, which stretches 3,125 meters in length. This physical capacity is significant, as it allows the airport to handle the largest commercial aircraft, including the Airbus A380, without operational difficulty.
The airport's history is marked by milestones such as its 40th anniversary celebration in 2006, the same year it hosted the first A380 prototype for a two-day visit. Today, the facility is structured around two interconnected terminals: Terminal 1, which manages both international and regional traffic, and Terminal 2, which is dedicated exclusively to regional flights. Beyond its role as a passenger hub, the airport has historically served as a corporate center, previously housing the head office of Air Guadeloupe.
In terms of regional standing, the airport is a vital node in the Caribbean network. As of 2019, it processed nearly 2.5 million passengers, ranking it as the second busiest airport in the Lesser Antilles. It sits behind Queen Beatrix International Airport in Aruba in total volume but ahead of Grantley Adams International Airport in Barbados. This volume is supported by major carriers like Air France, which maintains two Airbus A320 aircraft at the site specifically for regional service, cementing the airport's status as the primary transit point for the archipelago's six-airport network.
