In short: Founded in 1956 to secure India's industrial future, the Oil and Natural Gas Corporation grew from a modest government department into a vertically integrated energy titan. Today, it dominates domestic production and maintains a sprawling international presence, proving that state-led exploration can reshape a nation's entire economic and strategic landscape.

Established on 14 August 1956 by Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru, the Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) was born from the realization that energy independence was vital for India's post-independence industrial and defense ambitions. Initially a subordinate directorate, it was elevated to a commission in August 1956 and later became a statutory body in 1959. This transition provided the necessary administrative and financial authority to explore India's sedimentary basins, which were previously deemed unsuitable for development by colonial-era companies.

The corporation's rise was marked by significant technological and geographical expansion. In the early 1970s, ONGC moved offshore, discovering the massive Mumbai High field, which fundamentally altered India's oil scenario. By 2010, the government recognized its scale by conferring Maharatna status. Its international arm, ONGC Videsh Limited, has further extended this reach, currently managing 38 projects across 17 countries, including significant interests in Russia, Vietnam, and Myanmar. This global strategy was initiated as early as the 1960s, when chairman Keshav Dev Malaviya pushed for exploration in the Persian Gulf.

Today, ONGC remains the backbone of India's energy sector, accounting for approximately 70 percent of the country's crude oil and 84 percent of its natural gas production. Despite facing challenges like the natural decline of matured fields, the company utilizes advanced recovery techniques and continues to invest in deepwater exploration. Its evolution also included the 2018 acquisition of a 51.11 percent stake in Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited, further consolidating its market influence. As it navigates the transition toward alternative energy sources like shale gas, ONGC continues to balance its legacy of self-reliance with the demands of a modern, globalized energy market.
