How a real-life incident inspired the upcoming Indian action thriller film titled Om
In short: Directed by Rajkumar Periasamy, the upcoming Tamil-language action thriller Om explores the lives of unsung heroes hidden within society. Starring Dhanush and Mammootty, the production navigated significant changes in leadership and scheduling before settling on a worldwide theatrical release date of 20 November 2026, marking a major cinematic collaboration.
The development of Om, originally known as D55, began with a creative partnership between director Rajkumar Periasamy and actor Dhanush. Following the release of the director's 2024 film Amaran, the project was officially announced in November 2024. Although initially backed by Gopuram Films, production challenges—including reported increases in costs—led to a transition in early 2026. Wunderbar Films and RTake Studios eventually took over, ensuring the project's completion. The film's narrative, which Dhanush selected from two distinct ideas presented by the director, is rooted in a real-life incident and focuses on individuals who operate as unsung heroes within the public sphere.
Casting for the film brought together a diverse group of established talent. Mammootty, who was the director's primary choice for his character, joined the project after approximately seven months of negotiations, reportedly receiving 24 crore rupees for his role. The cast also features Sai Pallavi, Sreeleela, and Naseeruddin Shah, the latter of whom returns to Tamil cinema for the first time since 2000. Production began in early 2026, with filming locations spanning across Tamil Nadu, including a significant set built near Chennai, and concluding with a final schedule in Malaysia.
Technical and musical elements were finalized alongside the cast, with Sai Abhyankkar composing the soundtrack and Ezhil Arasu K handling cinematography. By June 2026, the film was officially titled Om, with the director noting that over 60 percent of the production was complete. Originally slated for an October release, the film was rescheduled to 20 November 2026 to avoid a conflict with another major theatrical release. Netflix has secured the digital streaming rights for the project, which remains one of the most anticipated entries in the 2026 Indian film calendar.
