From subway tokens to contactless taps: the evolution of New York transit

In short: New York City’s transit landscape has undergone a massive digital shift. Replacing the era of magnetic MetroCards and 1953-era tokens, the OMNY system aims to unify the metropolitan area through a single, seamless payment interface, allowing commuters to tap bank cards or mobile devices for much faster transit access.

The transition from physical tokens to the OMN/ny system—short for One Metro New York—was a decades-long process. While subway tokens were used from 1953 until they were phased out by 2003, the magnetic-stripe MetroCard served the city from 1993 until its sales finally ended on December 31, 2025. The modern OMNY system, designed by Cubic Transportation Systems using technology licensed from London's Oyster card, began its public rollout in May 2019.

The implementation was far from a simple switch. Early trials in 2006 and 2010 tested contactless payments, but formal planning for a MetroCard replacement only began in 2016. The rollout faced significant hurdles, including the COVID-19 pandemic, which delayed the completion of subway and bus readers from October to December 2020. Additionally, while the system was intended to be a regional standard, its expansion has been complicated by agencies like PATH and NJ Transit, which chose to pursue independent, incompatible systems.

Despite technical and budgetary complexities—with the project budget rising from an initial $85.4 million spent at launch to $772 million by June 2021—the system has seen massive adoption. Reports from the MTA in July 2025 indicated that OMNY was utilised by 75% of passengers paying fares. The system now supports a variety of payment methods, including Apple Pay, Samsung Pay, and contactless bank cards from around the world, though the MTA has had to invest millions to repair bus readers that frequently detached from vehicles.
