A record-breaking album that split the critics and conquered the charts
In short: Kings of Leon's Only by the Night achieved a rare feat: becoming a commercial juggernaut while sparking a fierce divide between international critics. While some publications gave it near-perfect scores, others dismissed it entirely, yet it still managed to break records in the UK and Australia.
Released in September 2008, Only by the Night was born from an intense production cycle. Writing began just days after the band's previous album, Because of the Times, was released. The recording process at Nashville's Blackbird Studio in early 2008 utilized a hybrid approach: the band recorded live performances onto 16-track analog tape before transferring them to a Pro Tools system for overdubbing and mixing. This technical choice helped ground the album's sound, which featured distinctive elements like a three-note riff using a Boss ME50 multi-effects pedal to create an octave sweep.
The album's commercial performance was staggering but geographically varied. In Australia, it was the highest-selling album of 2008 and was certified nine times platinum. In the UK, it became the biggest-selling digital album of all-time, surpassing Amy Winehouse's Back to Black. It also demonstrated incredible longevity, spending 131 consecutive weeks inside the UK Top 75 and over 100 weeks on the German charts, making it one of the few albums to remain on the charts for two years or longer.
Despite its massive sales—exceeding 6.2 million copies worldwide—the album faced a polarized critical reception. A notable discrepancy emerged between North American and UK press: while US publications like Pitchfork and PopMatters gave it scores as low as 2/10 and 3.8/10, UK outlets like The Observer awarded it a perfect 5/5. This divide highlights the complex nature of the album's appeal, which managed to secure multiple Grammy Awards and Brit Awards despite being viewed as 'brain rot' by some and a masterpiece by others.
