In short: Opeth's history is a study in persistence. After a chaotic founding that saw almost every original member depart, the band transformed into a global powerhouse. They eventually reached some of their highest commercial peaks in the 2010s, evolving from a fractured Stockholm group into a premier progressive metal act.

The band's origins in 1990 were marked by internal friction. Vocalist David Isberg initially recruited a lineup that fell apart when he hired bassist Mikael Åkerfeldt without the others' consent. This led to a total collapse of the original group, leaving only Åkerfeldt. He eventually stabilized the band by recruiting Peter Lindgren, Johan De Farfalla, and Anders Nordin, securing a contract with Candlelight Records and releasing 'Orchid' in 1995. The group first signed with Candlelight Records after recording a demo. They also released Morningrise and My Arms, Your Hearse in the late nineties.

The group's trajectory shifted significantly in the early 2000s. After the 1999 concept album 'Still Life', the band collaborated with Steven Wilson on 2001's 'Blackwater Park', which launched their first worldwide tour. This era saw a diversification of sound and personnel, including the addition of keyboardist Per Wiberg and the eventual departure of founding members Lopez and Lindgren, who were replaced by Martin Axenrot and Fredrik Åkesson. The band eventually added Joakim Svalberg as a keyboardist in 2011. They also saw Sami Karpinnen fill in for a tour before Waltteri Väyrynen joined permanently.

Commercial success followed this evolution. While 'Deliverance' (2002) and 'Damnation' (2003) saw modest US chart entries, 'Heritage' (2011) marked a significant breakthrough, becoming their highest-charting record to date by reaching number 19 on the Billboard 200 and number 2 on the US Hard Rock Albums chart. The band continued this momentum through 'Pale Communion' (2014) and 'Sorceress' (2016), both of which achieved top-tier placements in Europe before releasing 'The Last Will and Testament' in November 2024. The 2008 release Watershed peaked at the top of the Finnish charts. Their 2019 album was titled In Cauda Venenum.
