In short: Before Portland rose to prominence, Oregon City stood as a frontier powerhouse. Established by the Hudson's Bay Company, it served as a vital gateway for gold seekers and a seat of territorial power, all while perched atop dramatic basalt cliffs.

Established in 1829 by Dr. John McLoughlin of the Hudson's Bay Company, Oregon City was strategically positioned at the confluence of the Clackamas and Willamette Rivers. Its location was chosen to harness the power of the 40-foot-high Willamette Falls for lumber milling. The city quickly became a pivotal hub; it served as the final stop on the Oregon Trail for those seeking land claims in the 1840s and 1850s, and it flourished as a primary supply point during the California Gold Rush.

The city's early political and cultural significance was immense. The year 1844 saw its status change. to become an incorporated American town beyond the Rockies. It served as the capital of the Oregon Territory from 1848 until 1851, briefly rivaling Portland for regional supremacy. During this era, it hosted the Beaver Coins Mint in 1849 and published the Oregon Spectator in 1846—the first American newspaper west of the Rockies.

Geographically, the city is defined by a stark vertical split: a lower area on a riverside bench and an upper residential district atop a bluff of Canemah basalt. This basalt flowed approximately 2.5 million years ago from the Boring Lava Field. To connect these levels, the city constructed a water-powered municipal elevator in 1915 (later converted to electricity), which remains a historic landmark today.

While its economy was long dominated by forestry and paper mills, Oregon City is transitioning toward tourism and heritage. The Willamette Falls area is undergoing major renovation as part of the Willamette Falls Legacy Project, highlighting the city's shift from an industrial powerhouse to a site of historical preservation.
