How a Wisconsin lumber hub became the Sawdust Capital of the World
In short: Named after a Menominee chief, Oshkosh evolved from a modest fur-trading settlement into a powerhouse of the American lumber industry. Once dubbed the Sawdust Capital of the World, the city leveraged its waterways and rail access to build a legacy that spans historic architecture, aviation milestones, and global manufacturing.
Oshkosh, the seat of Winnebago County, was named for Menominee Chief Oshkosh, whose name translates to claw. While early European interest in the region was sparked by the fur trade in 1818, the city never dominated that market. Instead, the mid-nineteenth century brought a transformation driven by the wood industry. By 1860, the city hosted 11 lumber mills, and by 1874, that number had surged to 47 sawmills and 15 shingle mills. This industrial boom was bolstered by the 1859 arrival of rail transportation, which allowed the city to supply a rapidly expanding construction market.
The city's rapid development was not without catastrophe. On April 28, 1875, a massive fire devastated the area, consuming 70 stores, 40 factories, and 500 homes. The financial toll reached nearly $2.5 million, equivalent to approximately $67.3 million in 2022 currency. Despite this, the wealth generated by the lumber industry left a lasting mark on the city's landscape. Today, Oshkosh maintains six historic districts and dozens of individually listed sites on the National Register of Historic Places, featuring structures that reflect the prosperity of the era's entrepreneurs.
Beyond its industrial roots, Oshkosh has cultivated a unique cultural identity. It is home to EAA AirVenture, the world's largest airshow, which briefly makes Wittman Regional Airport the busiest in the world. The city also gained fame as the birthplace of OshKosh B'gosh, a clothing manufacturer that transitioned from adult workwear to iconic children's apparel. Today, the city remains a hub for specialty vehicle manufacturing through the Oshkosh Corporation, while continuing to host diverse events, from the International Pathfinder Camporee to various music festivals along the Fox River.
