The resurrection of a football brand in a graveyard of teams
In short: Orlando is a city of ghosts for professional football. From the 1960s to the 2020s, the region has seen a revolving door of short-lived leagues and failed franchises. The Orlando Storm represents a deliberate attempt to break this cycle of instability through a new ownership model.
The city of Orlando has a storied but turbulent history with professional football. Before the modern era, the region hosted a litany of minor league teams that largely vanished as their leagues collapsed. These included the Panthers (1960s), Blazers (1970s), Americans and Renegades (1980s), Thunder (1990s), and the Tuskers (late 2000s). This pattern of 'boom and bust' continued into the 21st century with the XFL and AAF eras, which saw the rise and fall of the Orlando Rage, the Apollos, and the underperforming Guardians.
The Orlando Storm officially debuted on October 7, 2025, as part of a major UFL rebranding and expansion. A group comprising Fox Corporation, RedBird Capital Partners, Dany Garcia, Dwayne Johnson, and Mike Repole provides the backing for the Storm, differing from earlier versions. To combat the history of team instability, owner Mike Repole is prioritizing a 'more intimate' fan experience by playing at Inter.co Stadium—a soccer-specific venue—rather than the larger Camping World Stadium.
The branding itself carries historical weight. The moniker 'Storm' recalls a deep heritage of football in Central Florida, despite its celebrated use by the Tampa Bay Storm between 1991 and 2017. This era was defined by the 'War on I-4,' a bitter rivalry between the Tampa Bay Storm and Orlando's Predators. By selecting this brand and a smaller stadium, the UFL aims to provide a sense of permanence and community that previous, more transient franchises lacked.
