In short: For six years, the world's most wanted man lived in a fortified mansion in Abbottabad, Pakistan. Behind high concrete walls, he raised a family, kept chickens, and watched pirated cartoons, all while evading detection just a short distance from a prominent military academy. Discover the reality of his final hideout.

Known locally as the Waziristan Haveli, the compound was a three-story structure completed in 2005 on a 3,500-square-metre plot. It featured concrete walls reaching up to 5.5 metres in height, topped with barbed wire, and lacked standard internet or phone connections. While the house appeared unremarkable from the outside, its interior was heavily fortified with privacy walls and security gates, designed to obscure the presence of its inhabitants from the surrounding Bilal Town neighborhood.

Intelligence officials tracked bin Laden to the site by identifying his courier, Abu Ahmed al-Kuwaiti, who purchased the land between 2004 and 2005. Inside, the living conditions were modest, characterized by cheap foam mattresses and a lack of air conditioning. Despite the austere environment, the compound functioned as a home; children were homeschooled in a dedicated classroom, and the residents maintained a vegetable garden, a cow, and roughly 100 chickens. Neighbors often viewed the occupants with suspicion, speculating they were smugglers due to their reclusive nature and refusal to participate in local charity.

The compound's true nature was revealed in 2011 when US Navy SEALs breached the walls during Operation Neptune Spear. Following bin Laden's death, a massive cache of digital files was recovered, revealing a surprising mix of al-Qaeda documents, wildlife documentaries, and pirated media, including video games like Final Fantasy VII and animated films such as Ice Age. To prevent the site from becoming a memorial, Pakistani authorities demolished the structure in February 2012, eventually proposing an amusement park for the location.
