In short: In 2006, Christina Aguilera abandoned contemporary trends to embrace the legends of jazz and soul. By adopting the alter ego Baby Jane, she fused mid-century idols with hip hop, creating a massive double album that conquered global charts and redefined her musical identity.

Released on August 9, 2006, Back to Basics represented a significant stylistic pivot for the American singer. Moving away from her previous sounds, Aguilera drew deep inspiration from the era between the 1920s and 1950s. She looked to the legacies of vocal icons such as Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, Etta James, and Otis Redding to anchor a new, modernized aesthetic.

The project was a complex, double-album undertaking. The first disc focused on a fusion of rhythm and blues, hip hop, and urban elements, frequently utilizing samples. The second disc offered a more organic approach, consisting almost entirely of original compositions, with the notable exception of "Candyman," which sampled "Tarzan & Jane Swingin' on a Vine." To achieve this sound, Aguilera served as executive producer, collaborating with a diverse roster of producers including Mark Ronson, DJ Premier, Linda Perry, Rob Lewis, and Rich Harrison.

This era was as much about visual transformation as it was about audio. Inspired by the glamour of classic Hollywood, Aguilera introduced her alter ego, Baby Jane, to signal a new persona. This metamorphosis was supported by a massive global tour spanning North America, Asia, Europe, Australia, and the Middle East from late 2006 through late 2008.

The album's commercial and critical impact was substantial. An initial 346,000 units sold propelled the record to the top of the US Billboard 200. While some critics questioned the album's length, others praised its diversity. At the 49th Annual Grammy Awards in 2007, the primary track, "Ain't No Other Man," secured the Best Female Pop Vocal Performance trophy. Totaled figures by November 2013 showed 1.7 million US purchases and more than five million global sales.
