In short: A tenacious midfielder known for his uncompromising tackling and stamina, Paul Ince carved out a storied career across England and Italy. Beyond his trophy-laden time at Manchester United, he made history in 1993 by becoming the first black player to captain the England national team, a milestone in English football.

Born in Ilford in 1967, Paul Ince emerged from the West Ham United youth system, debuting in 1986. His aggressive, all-action style in midfield quickly drew attention, leading to a controversial 1989 transfer to Manchester United for £1 million. Despite the friction caused by a premature photograph of him in a United kit, he flourished at Old Trafford, winning two Premier League titles and two FA Cups under Alex Ferguson. His tenure ended in 1995 with a £7.5 million move to Inter Milan, where he spent two seasons and reached the 1997 UEFA Cup final.

Ince’s international career was equally significant. He earned 53 caps for England, representing his country at Euro 1996, the 1998 World Cup, and Euro 2000. On 6 June 1993, during a tour of the United States, he stepped into the captaincy in the absence of David Platt and Tony Adams, marking a historic moment as the first black player to lead the national side. His grit was famously captured in a 1997 qualifier against Italy, where he finished the match in a blood-soaked shirt after suffering a head injury.

Following his playing days, which included stints at Liverpool, Middlesbrough, and Wolverhampton Wanderers, Ince transitioned into management. He took charge of clubs including Macclesfield Town and Milton Keynes Dons, where he earned multiple Manager of the Month awards. His career remains defined by his versatility and the sheer physical demand he placed on his game, qualities that established him as a central figure in the Premier League era.
