In short: Since 2016, Pema Khandu has navigated a complex political landscape in Arunachal Pradesh. After a year-long crisis, he assumed the role of Chief Minister, leading a government that underwent two significant party changes within a single year to secure a majority in the state assembly.

Pema Khandu, a member of the Monpa tribe, assumed the office of Chief Minister of Arunachal Pradesh on July 17, 2016, at the age of 36. His rise to power followed a period of political instability in the state. Before his tenure as Chief Minister, he held various ministerial positions, including Minister of Tourism, Urban Development, and Water Resources under the government of Nabam Tuki.

The political trajectory of Khandu's administration has been marked by rapid shifts in party affiliation. Led by him, 43 MLAs left the Indian National Congress for the People's Party of Arunachal in September 2016. By December 2016, following a suspension from the People's Party, Khandu and 33 other legislators joined the Bharatiya Janata Party. This move shifted the BJP's strength in the Legislative Assembly from 11 to 45 seats, granting them a majority with support from two independents.

Khandu has since secured multiple landslide victories. In the 2019 election, his party won 41 of 60 seats. In the 2024 election, the Bharatiya Janata Party won 46 of 60 seats, with allies including the Nationalist Congress Party, the National People's Party, and the People's Party of Arunachal. Beyond politics, Khandu has engaged in cultural and social initiatives, such as the 'Arunachal Rising Campaign' and the 'Hamara Arunachal Abhiyan', which launched on October 2, 2019, to strengthen police-public partnerships.

His administration has also focused on public outreach through initiatives like 'Sarkar Aapke Dwar' (now 'Seva Apke Dwar'), which aims to streamline government services through monthly camps. Additionally, he serves as the President of the Arunachal Pradesh Football Association, a role he has held since 2019.
