The Perito Moreno Glacier creates a spectacular, recurring natural dam and explosive ice rupture.
In short: Deep in the Andes, the Perito Moreno Glacier acts as a massive, shifting dam. By pushing against the coast of the Magallanes Peninsula, it bisects Lake Argentino, trapping water that eventually bursts through in a violent, world-famous rupture. This cycle of ice-bridge formation and collapse remains a captivating natural mystery.
Located in Argentina's Los Glaciares National Park, the Perito Moreno Glacier is a 250 square kilometer ice formation fed by the Southern Patagonian Ice Field. Unlike many glaciers that have retreated due to climate change, Perito Moreno maintained a rare state of equilibrium for much of the late 20th and early 21st centuries. While it has shown signs of retreating on its northern front since 2020, glaciologists continue to debate the specific mechanisms that allowed for its unusually long period of stability.
The glacier's most dramatic feature is its interaction with Lake Argentino. As the ice advances, it creates a natural dam that separates the Brazo Rico arm from the main body of the lake. Because the water in Brazo Rico has no outlet, it can rise up to 30 meters above the main lake level. The resulting pressure eventually forces a rupture, sending a massive volume of water through the ice barrier. These events are unpredictable, occurring anywhere from once a year to once a decade, and are classified as sudden, progressive, or minor depending on the discharge flow.
These ruptures draw thousands of international tourists to the region, providing a significant economic boost to the nearby city of El Calafate. The spectacle is so unpredictable that some collapses occur at night without witnesses. Beyond the ice, the glacier hosts unique life, such as the stonefly Andiperla willinki, a 1.5-centimeter insect that spends its entire life on the ice, feeding on wind-blown bacteria. Once feared extinct, this 'Patagonian dragon' was rediscovered in 2001, highlighting the extreme and fragile nature of this glacial ecosystem.
