A trophy forged from the armor of ancient Persian soldiers
In short: Beyond the fierce rivalries of Tehran and Isfahan lies a league defined by shifting names and political tension. From its professional founding in 2001 to a historic 2024 breakthrough, the Persian Gulf Pro League reflects the complex identity of Iranian football.
Established in 2001, the league was originally known as the Iran Pro League. To advocate for the Persian Gulf designation, the Iranian Football Federation rebranded the competition in 2006, despite ongoing disputes from various Arab nations over the waterway's name since the 1960s stemming from ethnic and political tensions. In 2014, the name was further updated to the Persian Gulf Pro League.
The league's structure has fluctuated significantly. It began with 14 clubs until the 2003–04 season, expanded to 16 in 2004, and then to 18 before being scaled back to 16 in 2013. Currently, the league consists of 18 teams competing over a 34-matchday period. The bottom two finishers each season face relegation to the Azadegan League, which serves as the second-highest tier.
The competition has seen eras of intense dominance. Persepolis established a record-breaking consecutive title streak between the 2016–17 and 2020–21 seasons. However, the 2024–25 season saw a historic shift when Tractor of Tabriz won their first-ever title, finishing with 68 points and breaking the long-standing dominance of traditional clubs from Tehran and Isfahan. This victory made them only the eighth different champion since the professional era began.
The championship trophy itself is a piece of art, crafted from brass and gold-plated. Its design features elements taken from the armor of two Persian Achaemenid soldiers, with additional references to the Persian Gulf. Each season, artisans spend about one and a half months creating a new copy of the trophy for the champions.
