The century-old football club that survived revolution and rebranding
In short: From a 1919 federation of local Bandung clubs to a modern professional powerhouse, Persib Bandung has navigated decades of political upheaval, league restructuring, and intense rivalry. The club has survived revolution and rebranding to become one of Indonesia's most successful football institutions, recently achieving an unprecedented three consecutive league titles.
The origins of Persib Bandung are rooted in the Bandoeng Inlandsche Voetbal Bond (BIVB), which was formed on 5 January 1919. Recent historical research announced in 2023 reveals that BIVB was actually a fusion of several local clubs, including Bintang Bandoeng, Zwaluw, and Pasar Ketjil. The club underwent several identity shifts, including a 1928 name change and a brief 1932 merger that resulted in the name PSKB, before finally establishing the Persib name on 18 March 1934.
The club's history is inextricably linked to Indonesian national identity. Following the nation's independence, Persib was reformed in 1948 during the Indonesian National Revolution. This spirit of resistance is still echoed by fans today, who sing the national song 'Halo, Halo Bandung'—a tribute to the 1946 Bandung Sea of Fire incident—at the start of matches. The club's badge even incorporates the Bandung city seal, featuring a black fortress and wavy water patterns, symbolizing its role as a representative of the Sundanese people.
After periods of decline and relegation in the late 1970s, Persib entered a modern era of unprecedented success. While the club won titles in the 1990s and 2014, it has recently achieved a historic feat: winning three consecutive top-flight league titles in the 2023–24, 2024–25, and 2025–26 seasons. This recent dominance follows a significant structural change in 2009, when the club established PT Persib Bandung Bermartabat to separate the team from municipal government funding, ensuring its survival in the professional era.
