In short: Madura United is the latest iteration of a footballing lineage that has spent decades wandering the Indonesian archipelago. From its origins in Jakarta to its current base in Pamekasan, the club's history is a complex map of rebranding, ownership shifts, and geographic migrations.

The club currently known as Madura United was established in its modern form on January 10, 2016. However, its roots stretch back to 1986 with the formation of Pelita Jaya in Jakarta. During its early years as Pelita Jaya, the team was a powerhouse in the Galatama league, securing three titles in 1988–89, 1990, and 1993–94. This era set the foundation for a club that would eventually become a frequent traveler.

Between 2000 and 2015, the club underwent a dizzying series of relocations and name changes. It moved from Jakarta to Solo (2000), Cilegon (2002), Purwakarta (2006), Bandung (2008), and Karawang (2009). The Bakrie Group eventually sold the club, leading to a return to Bandung in 2012. By 2015, the team was known as Persipasi Bandung Raya, though its home base was actually in Bekasi. This period of instability ended when ownership was transferred to Ari Dewanto Sutedi and Husodo Angkosubroto, who moved the club to Madura and rebranded it as Madura United.

In recent years, the club has stabilized its identity while competing on the international stage. After finishing as runners-up in the 2023–24 Liga 1, Madura United entered the inaugural 2024–25 AFC Challenge League. Their campaign saw them face clubs from Cambodia and Mongolia, eventually reaching the semi-finals before being eliminated by Preah Khan Reach Svay Rieng. Today, the club primarily plays its home matches at the Gelora Ratu Pamelingan and Gelora Bangkalan stadiums.
